Betty Jean (Bowen) Shumway went to be with her Lord on January 25th, 2014 at her home with family surrounding her.
Betty was born to Frank Bowen and Pearl (Cunningham) Bowen in Lake City, Michigan. Her family moved to the Gladwin area when she was 9 years old.
Betty married Donald Shumway March 30, 1946 and that marriage produced a family of 6 children. Judy (Shumway) Mertens (Flavious Hicks) of Farwell, Gerald Jack Shumway, Linda (Shumway) Hetherington of Gladwin, Vickie (Shumway) Charles Brubaker of Beaverton, Deborah (Shumway) Gary Manges of Gladwin and Ronald Shumway Sr (Connie Bell) of Gladwin. Betty has 38 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, also one sister Earline Bowen-Long of Clare.
Betty was a homemaker, worked on the poultry farm as well as the Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Midland for 23 years. She also served on the Buckeye Board and Census several years. On her retirement she was able to enjoy the things that held dear to her..., spending time with her family, friends and many trips to the cabin in the Upper Pennisula and working on the Wineagars School Class Reunion. Taking grandchildren with her to keep family interested in history of family as well as enjoying being a very big part of their lives.
Preceding her in death was her father Frank Bowen, her mother Pearl Bowen, 2 brothers Francis and Robert Bowen, 2 sisters Goldie Sparks, Tessibell Eddy and son Gerald Jack Shumway. One great-greatgrandchild, Toby Lee Manges of Gladwin.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday January 29, 2014 at 11 am from Sisson Funeral Home with Pastors Donald Smith and Scott Harper presiding with burial in Billings Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 8 pm and Wednesday 10 am until time of services. Those wishing an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the wishes of the family.
