Obituary for Donald O. Bowen
Donald O. Bowen
Lake, Michigan

Donald Oliver Bowen, long time resident of Lake, Michigan was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on June 23,2019. He passed away peacefully at Gladwin Pines surrounded by loving family. He was born in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of John Oliver Bowen and Juanita {Cook} Bowen. Don lived to be 95 years old and leaves behind many family members, friends and an entire community to mourn his loss.

Don had many accomplishments during his lifetime. He served in the Army during World War II; his WWII cap was one of his most prized possessions. During his earlier years he was an officer with the Masonic Lodge of Detroit, which is affiliated with the Shriners. He was a life member and Post Commander for six years of the Lake DAV, and also a member and officer of the Lake Eagles and VFW.

For 24 years, together with his wife, Helen, they delivered meals to homebound seniors, part of the Meals on Wheels Program. He was also nominated as Outstanding Senior of the Year by Council on Aging. Don volunteered most of his retired days doing what he loved best, helping people in need. He was a definite asset to the community. His service to so many people and organizations has touched the hearts of his community, friends and family and will never be forgotten.

Don enjoyed the stories, memories and laughter shared with his many friends at the Farwell and Lake meal sites and he will be missed. He will also be sadly missed by Pastor Gene Hockey and his entire church family at Bethany Baptist of Lake, Michigan. Also, mourning his loss is special granddaughter, Angel Ray, neighbor, Alec Hammond and his family, special friends, Jim and Debby and his favorite home health aide, Trisha. The love, kindness and time that they shared with Don will never be forgotten. The family would also like to thank the many nurses that made him their favorite patient in the VA Hospital and Midland Hospital

Left to cherish his memory are his five children, Juanita {Bill} Eppler, Donald E. {Marge} Bowen, Russell {Jean} Bowen, Kathleen Penrod, and Bryan {Trish} Bowen. Also, he leaves 17 grandchildren, 29 great- grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Queen Bowen, a grandson, Jeffrey R. Bowen and the mother of his children, Lucille Buvia.

Arrangements were made with assistance from Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home in Gladwin, Michigan.

There will be a Memorial Service at a later date for Don. Contributions can be made in Don’s memory to your charity of choice, Lake DAV or Bethany Baptist Church of Lake, Michigan.

“We’ll always remember that special smile, that caring heart and that warm embrace that he always freely gave to all of us.”
