Olive Irene Simpkins 1918-2018
Olive Irene Simpkins, 99, of Gladwin, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday February 25, 2018, at Brethren Care Village in Ashland, Ohio. Her new address is HEAVEN.
Irene was born on May 12, 1918, to Harry Clyde Hall and Alice Melissa Pierce in Portage, Ohio. She attended school at Portage Center and excelled in her studies. She played basketball in high school and was a cheerleader for the boys basketball team. At age 99 she could still recite her cheers for “PT”. She married and lived on a farm in Jerry City where she dedicated her time as a homemaker and entrepreneur. Her outside business interest included selling eggs to many people in Bowling Green including the professors and staff at Bowling Green College. She was active in her children’s 4H endeavors and supported their many fundraisers with pies and home bakes.
In 1959, the family moved to Clare, Michigan where Irene managed one of the first commercial poultry barns in the state on the family farm. She continued to be active in the lives of her children and was always helping anyone in need in her community. She was a member of the Eagle Church of God where her ice-cream was a favorite at the summer picnics.
Irene later moved to Gladwin, Michigan and began a new chapter in her life. She made many new friends and helped her children and grandchildren as they farmed and branched out in new careers. She began traveling and took trips to Texas, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Ohio, and many events with the Haines travel group. For the past several years she divided her time between Gladwin and Ashland, Ohio spending time with her daughter and making new friends in the Ashland area. She celebrated her 99th birthday with a party at the Riverwalk in Gladwin last year with her family and loved ones.
Irene was the last surviving child of her parents and was preceded in death by her brother Leonard (Sylvia) Hall, Lester (Sophia) Hall, Joseph (Ruby) Hall of Wood County Ohio. She is survived by her sons and daughter; Eugene (Evelyn) Simpkins, Gary (Janette) Simpkins of Gladwin, Michigan, John (Alma) Simpkins of Millington, Michigan, and Darlene (Michael) Meehan of Ashland, Ohio. In addition, she was a wonderful grandmother to seven grandsons, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild Holden. They will greatly miss her.
Irene loved her family more than anything in the world. She was a wonderful Christian woman and a bright light to anyone who was blessed to know her. She always wore a smile and put everyone’s needs and interests before her own. Her children arise up, and call her Blessed….Proverbs 31:28.
